Former militant turned politician Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan was taken into custody on Tuesday (8) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the abduction of an individual, police said.
Despite various allegations of rights violations, he also served as Chief Minister of Eastern province in the past and as State Minister under previous governments.
Recently, he was inquired about his alleged involvement in 2019- Easter Sunday attacks following a Channel 4 documentary that claimed the former militant leader was in direct contact with the bombers. Pillayan denied any wrongdoing in the past.
Even though police did not identify the individual whose abduction case is reopened, sources said that Pillayan was arrested over the abduction and killing of former Vice Chancellor of Eastern University Prof S. Raveendranath.
Recalling the messages and responses that came over the reopening of her father's death eighteen years ago, his daughter Abiramee Raveendranath who lives abroad shared an emotional message reiterating her call for justice and truth.
"What we want is the truth. How can you eliminate a person who would never wish ill for other people without even giving his lifeless body to his family? Who ordered to kill him and what did they achieve from this?" she said on the death of her father.
He was abducted by unknown persons who came in a vehicle within a high-security zone in Colombo 7 while on his way to attend a conference on December 15, 2006. (Northeastern Monitor/April 10/2025)
