Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for early polls to the Provincial Councils and implementing the Constitution in full.

Addressing a joint media briefing today along with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat today, Indian Premier said he was informed of the inclusive approach adopted by President Dissanayake.

The mandate of all nine PCs transpired over seven years ago.

“We also talked about reconstruction and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. President Disanayaka appraised me of his inclusive approach. We hope that the Sri Lankan Government will meet the aspirations of the Tamil people and fulfil its commitment towards fully implementing the Constitution of Sri Lanka, and conducting Provincial Council Elections,” Indian Premier said.

It is notable that Prime Minister Modi omitted any reference with regard to longstanding India's policy of ‘ensuring implementation of 13th Amendment’ this time as well but only with a mere reference to ‘fully implementing the Constitution.

The ongoing Indian fishermen frequently entering Northern waters and engaged in bottom trawling was also raised at the bilateral meeting held between the two leaders.

“We also discussed issues related to fishermen's livelihood. We agreed that we should proceed with a humane approach in this matter. We also emphasised on immediate release of the fishermen and their boats,” Premier Modi said. (Northeastern Monitor/April 5/2025)
