An individual who worked as a driver to the former Eastern Chief Minister S. Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (18) at his residence in Valaichenai, Batticaloa, over the abduction and enforced disappearance of former Vice Chancellor of Eastern University Prof S. Raveendranath eighteen years ago.
The CID team from Colombo arrested T. Jeyanthan, the long-time driver of the former militant turned Chief Minister Chandrakanthan. He was taken to the CID Head office in Colombo for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Pillayan was taken into custody over the incident on April 8 and further remanded for 90 days under a Detention Order issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Prof Raveendranath was abducted by unknown persons who came in a vehicle within a high-security zone in Colombo 7 while on his way to attend a conference on December 15, 2006. (Northeastern Monitor/April 10/2025)
