Govt urged to release wardead cemeteries in N&E

The government should grant access to the wartime cemeteries in North and Eastern provinces where the war dead is buried in order to let the war affected people to commemorate their loved ones, Vanni district MP T. Raviharan said in Parliament yesterday(7).


Taking part in the budget debate, the Vanni district MP said that Tamil people have a tradition of remembering their lost loved ones respective of their religious faiths for generations. 


Stressing that war affected people commemorated their loved ones peacefully at last Maveerar Day on November 27 at Mullivaikaal, the MP pointed out that military grabbed several war time cemeteries and continue to occupy them after demolishing the tombstones of fallen LTTE cadres. 


The government should allow people to grant access to these cemeteries by releasing them from military custody if it is genuine in reconciliation efforts, the MP said. (Northeastern Monitor/ March 8/2025)
