Elephant Pass Salt revived after decades as ‘Raja Lunu’

 

The newly launched brand name of Raja Lunu salt from Elephant Pass Saltern factory. 



The Elephant Pass Saltern factory was inaugurated today manufacturing iodine mixed table salt packets after decades under the new brand name of ‘Raja Lunu’ by the National People's Power (NPP) government. 


Using the latest modern technology and resources, the plant is capable of producing five Metric Tonnes of salt packets on a given day. 


Minister of Local industries Sunil Handunetti, Northern Governor N. Vedanayagam and senior officials of National Salt Limited took part in the inauguration ceremony. 


Meanwhile, Tamil MPs condemned the move of rebranding the well known ‘Elephant Pass’ salt into a new name by the government. ITAK MP S. Shritharan wrote of the House to change the brand name to the old one considering decades long local identity the plant was well known across the island. 



NPP MPs from Jaffna responded saying that the name will be changed into the old brand in near future. (Northeastern Monitor/ March 29/2025)
