Rights defenders in N&E labelled as terrorists: UN Special Rapporteur

UNHRC session underway: File pix

Human Rights defenders working in North and Eastern provinces often have been labelled as 'terrorists' and subjected to violence and intimidation, a UN Special Rapporteur said.

Submitting the report to the ongoing 54th session of the Human Rights Council under the Agenda of "Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development", Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders Mary Lawlor said she has received information that rights defenders are subjected to intimidation and labelled as 'anti-state' as well.

The Special Rapporteur has also received information that, in Sri Lanka, defenders working in the conflict-affected north and east face disproportionate violence, surveillance and labelling as terrorists and that many women human rights defenders have been labelled as anti-State and have faced violence, stigmatization and attacks during peaceful protests, according to the report titled "Out of sight: human rights defenders working in isolated, remote and rural contexts" (Northeastern Monitor/ February 27/2025)
