Jaffna youth claims he was tortured by Nelliyadi police in custody

 

N. Ilankeswaran from Nelliyadi claimed that he was tortured by Nelliyadi police while in custody over a false charges. 


A Jaffna youth from Nelliyadi claimed that the area police picked up on dubious charges and tortured him while in custody causing injuries on his left hand. 


The victim identified as Nandakumar Ilankeswaran claimed that he was picked by police personnel attached to Nelliyadi police who came in a tuk tuk on February 18 near his mother's residence. 


Addressing a media briefing at Jaffna Press Club on Monday( 24), the youth claimed he was tortured by police while in custody over a theft incident that he never heard of. 


Following pain in my hand, I pleaded with them to admit me to the hospital. I was taken to Manthikai hospital first and later transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment, the youth said. 


He was produced before Point Pedro Magistrate Court through video call facility and granted bail. The case is to be called again on March 10. 


The youth claimed that he is the sole breadwinner of the family earning an income through paint work but currently unable to support his family with his injured hand. 


Mr Ilankeswaran said he had also lodged a complaint with the regional office Rights Commission in Jaffna. The commission also summoned the police to appear over the incident as well. (Northeastern Monitor/ February 25/ 2025)
