Protesters, political activists and journalists have been questioned over the recent protest staged in front of illegally constructed buddhist shrine in Palaly, Jaffna this week.

Political activists attached to Tamil National People's Front including former MP S. Kajendran and locals whose land remains under military custody were also summoned by police and statements were recorded.

Two local journalists - T. Piratheepan and V. Parathan were also questioned by police over a banner that was shared on social media platforms as well.

On February 12, a continuous protest was launched after it came to light that moves are underway to acquire another eight acres of private land around the Vihara premises.

The land owners categorically refused to give their lands or accept any other alternative arrangements other than returning their own ancestral lands. (Northeastern Monitor/February 22/2025)
