A protest march against new liquor stores in Kilinochchi: Pix:Northeastern Monitor |
A civil society-led protest was staged in Kilinochchi today against the higher number of liquor licenses that were issued for the district following permits issued by the previous government.
Locals, civil society outfits and youth groups took part in the protest march which commenced from Kilinochchi bus stand to District Secretariat where a petition was handed over to authorities urging for legal action against those liquor stores which are located near schools and religious shrines.
Protesters alleged that liquor licenses were issued by the previous government as "political bribes" by the previous government with the consent and alleged recommendations of local politicians.
Over a dozen liquor licenses and restaurant permits were issued to set up outlets within Kilinochchi town alone. (Northeastern Monitor/December 24/2024)
