At least twenty-three Indian fishermen who were held for engaging in illegal poaching were released by Kayts Courts under tough conditions after being handed in suspended sentences.

The Courts handed in two years of Rigorous imprisonment (RI) suspended for six years. Since three of them were skippers of the mechanized bottom trawlers, they were sentenced to a six-month jail term along with a fine of Rs four million.

The Courts also held that if they failed to pay the fine, they will have to serve an additional three months of jail term as well. (Northeastern Monitor/ December 4/2024)
