President Anura Kumara Dissanayake vowed to protect Northern fisheries resources from exploitation by foreign countries through illegal fishing methods following the end of war in 2009.
Addressing an election rally in Vavuniya yesterday (10), the President stressed that certain countries engaged in exploiting fisheries for resources for a long time.
“Several countries are engaged in illegal fishing in the Northern sea, robbing our marine resources. As a government, we will take all necessary steps to protect our marine resources and the rights of our fishermen,” President assured.
President Dissanayake indirectly mentioned the ongoing illegal bottom trawling practice by Indian fishermen in the Northern sea at the expense of Northern fishermen’ livelihood in recent years. (Northeastern Monitor/Nov 11/ 2024)
