Will not abolish Provincial councils until new mechanism in place: NPP assures

JVP senior member Tilvin Silva

The ruling National Peoples’ Power (NPP) assured that the Provincial Council system will not be abolished until an equivalent mechanism is put in place that would meet the expectations of the Tamil people.

Addressing the media today after the landslide victory today at Parliamentary polls where NPP won three seats in Jaffna district (15), party stalwart Tilvin Silva noted that the PC system under the 13th Amendment failed to meet the expectations of Tamil people and the government has no plans to abolish it until a new mechanism introduced.

“Our stand on the 13th amendment is mentioned clearly in our manifesto. The PC system was introduced over 37 years ago. It was introduced in the beginning to address Tamil people’s issues in the North. I don’t think it addressed them even though Tamil people are facing basic issues. However, there is an expectation from Tamil people on the PC system as well,” the senior JVP member told reporters at the party Head office in Colombo today.

NPP secured a record number majority of 159 seats in the total 225-member Parliament as election results were announced today officially by the Election Commission. (Northeastern Monitor/ Nov 16/2024)
