Police brutality in Chunnakam: OIC transferred & 4 officers suspended

The Officer in Charge (OIC) of Chunnakam police station was transferred and four police officers were suspended with immediate effect over the recent incident where two police officers in civil manhandled two individuals.

Earlier,  Jaffna police ordered a probe over the recent incident following the directive issued by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.

Addressing the media on steps taken by police to probe the incident last Saturday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Jaffna region) M.S.M. Jarul told the reporters that the argument broke when two police officers who were in civil demanded to show the driving license of a van driver.

The argument turned into a clash when the van driver demanded identification documents from the officers who were in civil.

A complaint was lodged that two individuals were assaulted by two police officers and a mother and baby who were travelling in the van were also pushed down during the assault.

The police officers claimed that the van collided with the motorbike they were travelling and an argument broke when they insisted on showing the van driver's driving license. Both officers were admitted to the hospital as well.

A special team headed by Deputy Inspector of General of Police (DIG) -Jaffna Kalinga Jayasinghe is currently investigating the incident. (Northeastern Monitor/ Nov 12/2024)
