Nanattan livestock farmers urge authorities to allocate grasslands

Nanattan farmers at the Northern Governor's office yesterday to hand over a petition seeking to allocate grasslands.

Livestock farmers in Nanattan, Mannar alleged their livelihood is under threat as grasslands have not been allocated in the region for the last eight years due to political influence by both senior government officials and politicians.

The affected farmers met with Northern Governor N. Vethanayahan yesterday at his office and handed over a petition seeking to resolve their issue of allocating grasslands for their livestock 35,000 in the region.

The farmers also stressed that nearly 2500 families depend on livestock as their primary livelihood source as well.

The farmers also alleged that the delay for not allocating the grasslands is due to certain moves which are underway to lease those grasslands for private parties.

Northern Governor Vethnayahan assured to look into the issue immediately followed by a scheduled visit to the region on November 21. (Northeastern Monitor/Nov 13/2024)
