Thousands of Tamil-speaking people across North and Eastern provinces remembered their war dead peacefully today (Nov 27) despite downpouring and cyclonic conditions that prevailed in the two provinces throughout the day.
War-affected people, former cadres, relatives of fallen cadres and the public took part in collective commemorative events that were organized in the one-time cemeteries of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
At Mullivaikkal Square, Mullaitivu where the final phases of war came to an end, the public observed the collective commemoration at 6.05 pm. The oil lamp was lightened by Vallipuram Pushpamalar, the mother of a fallen cadre.
In Kodikamam, Chavakachcheri, locals organized the event in front of a military base that was built on the one-time cemetery and engaged in collective remembrance activities.
Similar events were held in other cemeteries in the two provinces such as Alambil, Kudanthai North, Chati, Eechankulam (Vavuniya), Vakarai (Batticaloa), Mavadimunmaari, Aadkaativeli (Mannar) and Kanchikudichchaaru (Ampara) as well.
Commonly known as Maveerar Naal - Martyrs Day is observed annually on November 27 to remember those who were killed during a nearly three decades-long war by the locals. (Northeastern Monitor/ Nov 27/2024)
