Govt rules out on federal or implementing UN Resolutions

The National Peoples' Power government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ruled out that it has no plans to devolve powers with provinces under a federal structure nor implement UN Resolutions that were passed on Sri Lanka related to Reconciliation and Accountability.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet briefing on Wednesday, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath said there was no understanding reached between Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) over the governance structure and implementing UN Resolutions in exchange for political support from major Tamil party from North and East.

Former Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila alleged that the government had reached a secret agreement with ITAK earlier in order to ensure the party's support in Parliament. (Northeastern Monitor/Nov 7/2024)
