The ongoing cyclonic weather condition coupled with heavy downpouring cripples the North, East and upcountry regions leaving thousands of locals displaced for temporary homes and shelters.

The major agrarian tanks in the province including the Iranaimadhu tank reached their maximum capacity by last night. The sluice gates of the Iranaimadhu tank in Kilinochchi were opened last night after locals residing in lowlands were warned about potential flooding if rains continue in the coming days.

The normalcy in the two provinces was affected by limited transport facilities as main and local access roads were flooded. In Jaffna, several streets within the city and coastal region are among the affected areas.

According to the situation report released by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 62,505 persons from 17922 families in the Northern province were affected due to the bad weather while 129,531 persons from 36811 families were affected in the East.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said that the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located to the east about 120 km of Trincomalee is likely to move closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours.

Under the influence of the system cloudy skies will prevail over most parts of the island, very heavy showers and strong gusty winds can be expected in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western and Central provinces, the weather forecast issued this afternoon said.

“Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Central, western and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Kegalle districts. Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places,” the forecast said.

Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central, Central, Western, North-western, Southern and Eastern provinces, according to the advisory.  (Northeastern Monitor/ Nov 27/2024)
