TNPF leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam arrested for violating election laws

(Update) Leader of Tamil National Peoples’ Front (TNPF) and former Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam was granted police bail a short while ago after being arrested for violating election regulations this evening. 

Earlier, he was taken into custody by Nelliyadi police over violating election regulations, police said. 

He was taken into custody while engaged in canvassing in the area. Currently, he is detained at the police station. 

Under Section 75 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, a candidate or his family members are barred from canvassing for votes directly.
