Threats to Israeli tourists: suspects detained under PTA

Three suspects who were taken into custody earlier over planning to carry out an attack targetting Israeli tourists in Eastern coast are detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) , Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said today.

According to DIG Thalduwa, Terrorism Investigations Department secured Detention Orders under PTA through Courts as well.

One of the suspects - a Jaffna resident was taken into custody last Sunday in Chunnakam, Jaffna.

Northeastern Monitor reliably learns that when the regional Jaffna office of Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) sought police assistance to visit him, they were told that the suspect was taken to Colombo by yesterday.

Many international humanitarian organizations and rights groups including the United Nations repeatedly urged successive Sri Lanka governments to repeal the draconian law which enables authorities to detain suspects for a long time without being produced before them in a court.
