Former ITAK Jaffna district Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran urged the government to reveal details with regard to politicians and individuals who secured liquor licenses under the previous government.
Stressing that there have been dozens of new liquor licenses distributed to politicians and individuals with political support across the country, the former MP said that the public deserved to know the truth behind these initiatives that were taken by previous government ahead of upcoming Parliamentary polls on November 14.
Mr Sumanthiran also alleged that there have been credible reports that some of the liquor licenses which were obtained by politicians were transferred to third parties at exorbitant prices as well.
In North, there have been several liquor shops opened in recent months which were issued by the previous government secretly to politicians and influential figures ahead of the recently concluded Presidential elections.
Earlier, the Commissioner General of the Excise Department said 172 new liquor licenses were issued since 2022 as well. (Northeastern Monitor/ Oct 3/2024)
