Lalith-Kugan abduction case: Gotabaya refuses to appear in Jaffna Courts

 


The habeas corpus   Fundamental Rights (FR)  petition was filed over the abduction of  Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan who disappeared in Jaffna in 2019. 


Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa refused to appear before Jaffna Magistrate Court to record a statement regarding the disappearance of two human rights activists in Jaffna thirteen years ago but expressed his willingness to appear in any other court in the country. 


The habeas corpus   Fundamental Rights (FR)  petition was filed over the abduction of  Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan who disappeared in Jaffna. The former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, then Defence Secretary, refused to go to Jaffna Magistrate court on personal security concerns. 


When the FR petition that was filed over the abduction of two youths was taken up for hearing today, the former President’s lawyer Romeh de Silva informed his client’s decision of not being willing to appear before Jaffna courts citing security reasons. 


Earlier, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa refused to appear before the Court in 2019 soon after he assumed duties citing security concerns even after the end of the war. he petitioners sought an order to compel Rajapaksa to testify, as he no longer serves as President. 


The bench consists of Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Wengappuli. The case is to be taken up for hearing on March 18, next year. (Northeastern Monitor/ Oct 22/2024)
