Kunam Pushanthan, a determined young weightlifter from Chavakacheri, Jaffna left for South Africa to take part Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship- 2024 earlier this week.

As a self-made weightlifter with a passion for the game, he was selected to compete in the prestigious Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, set to be held in South Africa later this month.

However, financial challenges soon threatened his dream, as he struggled to secure the necessary funds for training and equipment. After numerous setbacks, Pushanthan was on the verge of giving up. He is competing in powerlifting under the 120 Kg open category.

Considering the financial difficulties he faced in securing a sponsorship to attend the championship, the Lyca Gnanam Foundation (LGF) led by founder Allirajah Subaskaran came forward to sponsor him to attend the competition. (Northeastern Monitor/ October 9/2024)
