The National Peoples’ Power (NPP) led government announced today that the new Parliament which will be convened next month following polls would decide on the fate of the draconian law Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath said.
Responding to a question on the government’s stand on PTA in the wake of recent arrests of four persons over planning to carry out attacks on Israeli tourists in Arugambay and other popular tourist spots in East, Minister Herath said that the government has not taken any decision on the law and it will continue to be operational.
Earlier, NPP said in its Presidential election manifesto that once it comes into power, the party will repeal the decades-long draconian law that enables longstanding detention of suspects without requiring them to be produced before a Court.
"Abolition of all oppressive acts including the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and ensuring civil rights of people in all parts of the country.” the NPP manifesto reads.
Last week, the Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) secured Detention Orders (DO) under PTA against four suspects who were taken into custody over allegedly planning to carry out an attack targetting Israelis in the Eastern province. (Northeastern Monitor/Oct 29/2024)
