A complaint was lodged with the regional office of Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) by a group of villagers from Velveri village of Trincomalee alleging that moves are underway to lease their residential lands to a third party due to political influence.

In the complaint lodged to the HRCSL office, the villagers alleged that 41 acres of their residential lands are still under custody of various government agencies after military occupied them for decades after they displaced in 1983.

However, they alleged that out of those residential land, moves are underway to lease 35 acres of land to a private party belonged to majority community.

We tried to resettle in our land after war ended in 2009 but military continued go occupy our lands. Later, Department of Wildlife marked out lands and refused to allow us to resettle, the villagers noted.

The villagers claimed that they came to know their lands are being cleared by the department in order to lease to a private party. They also alleged since all other state department failed to resolved their issue, they are forced to lodge a complaint with HRC office. (Northeastern Monitor/Oct 1/2024)
