Court order sought to ban remembrance ceremonies of Thiyagi Thileepan

Police have sought a court order from Jaffna Magistrate Courts to ban annual commemoration events of Thiyagi Thileepan which is scheduled to commence from tomorrow onwards (September 15) and will continue till September 26. 


Jaffna Police made the application to the Court yesterday seeking its directive to prohibit any commemorative or remembrance activities within the region during this period. 


The Court is scheduled to take up the application for hearing next Wednesday (September 18) and two individuals named in the application- Tamil National Peoples' Front (TNPF) MP S. Kajendran and former Mayor of Jaffna V. Manivannan are instructed to appear before the Courts.  


The move by police is to prevent 37th remembrance ceremonies organized at the partially damaged memorial located near Nallur Kandaswamy temple kovil, Jaffna and similar type of ceremonies planned across the region. 


Known by the nom de guerre Thileepan, Rasaiah Parthipan, one time Jaffna Commander of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) died while on fast unto death campaign in 1987 demanding Tamil peoples' rights and urged India to keep its assurances it made at that time.
