Chavakachcheri hospital dispute resolved after Acting MS assumed duties

Chavakachcheri residents staged a protest last week in front of the hospital demanding authorities to resolve the issues while expressing solidarity with Dr Archchuna on July 11.

The Chavakachcheri Base Hospital which saw protests and tense situation in recent weeks over the transfer of Acting Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr R. Archchuna returned to normalcy today after a new Acting MS was appointed by Provincial Health Services today.

Dr Archchuna returned to the hospital today following a three-day-long medical leave during which he was summoned to the Health Ministry in Colombo last week. A tense situation erupted in the office of MS in the hospital when Dr Archchuna entered the room where, Dr G. Rajeev, who was appointed to cover up duties was seated.

Following heated arguments over the legality of the appointment of Dr Rajeev as Acting MS during his absence, Dr Archchuna finally left the hospital with some documents.

Dr Rajeeva, who spoke to the media after the event said that the hospital operations have returned to normal as usual.

Earlier, Medical Officers and Consultants attached to the hospital withdrew from their duties due to new administrative steps introduced by the Acting Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Ramanathan Archchuna who assumed duties on June 14.

He was appointed to cover up the duties after the post was vacated by the outgoing officer.

His public criticism through his personal Facebook account on the conduct of Consultants and Medical Officers attached to the hospital and shortcomings in developing the Base hospital facilities despite millions of diaspora funds channelled through to the hospital in recent years went viral in social media platforms this week.
